Modeling and Acting Industry Terms

Ad - Abbreviation of advertisement or advertising. "Ad work" means a still photography session for a specific product.

Advertising Agency - Company who does the artwork and production for an advertisement.

A.F.T.R.A. - American Federation of television and radio artists. A union for those appearing on TV or radio. Either video and/or audio work.

Bookings - A model's "bookings" are his/her assignments or jobs.

Buyer - A person who does the buying for a store.

Casting Director - A director of a film or modeling assignment who also selects the people and/or models for the job.

Catalogue Photography - Posing for a catalogue assignment. The model will need to know how to pose to show the full selling points of the garment given to him/her.

Client - Any person or company that retains the services of a model.

Collection - A designer will call all the clothes that they designed that season their "collection."

Commercial Model - The "realistic" type. Attractive, not necessarily gorgeous.

Commission - the sum deducted from a model's earnings by her agency for their services, usually around 20% in the U.S. and higher abroad.

Composite / Composite Card - A printed card or brochure which contains pictures of a model in a variety of poses, garments, hairstyles and facial expressions and the model's name and physical statistics. Models and agencies use composite cards to market themselves to clients.

Day Rate - The fee that a model receives for a single booking that lasts the entire day.

Designer's Model - A model who works exclusively for a designer.

Editorial Photography - Posing for a fashion assignment. Model will be concerned with mood, feeling and wardrobe. Action posing is used.

Exhibit Model / Convention Model / Promotional Model - Models who host or hostess for conventions or other promotions. They may hand out brochures, souvenirs or just pose and look pretty/handsome, as an eye catcher for a display.

Fashion Show / Runway Model - A model who models fashions lie in front of an audience.

Fitting Model - A model who stands while a fashion is being created by a designer. The model is usually required to have specific measurements. The designer sews the outfit onto the model.

Flat Rate - Fee for a model's services which is negotiated on the basis of a one-time-only payment and which excludes the future payment of royalties or residuals.

Free Lance Model - A model who books his/her own jobs from his/her own contacts and bills his/her own jobs; or, a model who is not registered exclusively with one agency, but usually several.

Go See - A term used by professional models and agencies when a model is going on an interview. They would "go see" a client at a specific time or block of time for a possible booking.

High Fashion Model - A type of model who can look very sophisticated or unique and do dramatic posing. (Female, 5'8" +)

Industrial Films - Movies that are filmed to endorse a company's product. Often seen with the company privately.

Illustrative Model - A model who poses with a product, anything but fashion.

Location - If a model is booked to go "on location," the job may take place literally anywhere except in a photographer's studio.

Plus Size Model - Female 5'8", typically dress sizes 8-14.

Press Showing - A live sowing of the coming season's fashions at an exclusive viewing for the press only.

Print - The pictures that are the final result of the photographer's efforts are called prints. Print work covers al bookings that involve still photography.

Release - Every booking represents a contractual agreement between the client and the model. A model release spells out the terms of the agreement and includes the limit to which the photos may be used. It also includes information about royalties, residuals and payment terms.

S.A.G. - Screen Actors Guild. A union for actors appearing on film.

Scale - the minimum amount that any performer must be paid for an appearance on film or videotape. It may amount to less than the model's regular rate. Sometimes a model may prefer residuals rather than negotiate a flat rate (higher than scale), which precludes residuals.

Specialty Modeling - A model with special qualities (hands, legs, feet, eyes, etc.)

Tea Room Modeling - A fashion model who models clothes informally during a luncheon or dinner hour.

Tear Sheets - Pages torn from a magazine, brochure or newspaper of the model. The model "tears" them from the publication to include in their portfolio.

Test Shots - Pictures a photographer will take of a model to test ideas.

TFP - Time For Print. A common offer from photographers who are looking for talent, but cannot pay them with money.

Trunk Showing - A designer's original collection of designs that are shipped to various cities to be shown.

Screening - Interviewing many models for an assignment and selecting the most suitable.

Voice Over - An actor's voice will be used for another model being photographed in a film or commercial.

Voucher - A three copy receipt that a model receives from an agency to have signed at the end of an assignment. A copy goes to the client, to the model and to the agency. The client and the model both sign it to show agreement on hours and fees earned.

Wholesale Model - A model who works for a manufacturer in the wholesale salon where buyers place their orders. The model shows fashions to buyers. This is also done locally when representatives from companies come to a city to show the line to buyers.
